“In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” I have mixed feelings about Andy Warhol, but here I am, in the future he predicted, trying to make sense of my lowly self among a world of superstars. Just as he mentioned, popularity has become run of the mill. People have loyal followings of thousands deep and often it’s unclear for what talent, skill, or value besides their face, the way their hair falls, or even simply acquaintance with popular people. In a world like this, you have to scream over the crowd, be a bit more brazen, show a little more skin, post a few more selfies to be noticed. And I’m not against selfies. It’s just that the journey to self-discovery is becoming increasingly difficult among the steady news feed.
In a world like this, self worth is measured by the size of one’s audience. We see more of our reflections and spend less time reflecting. Likes are in abundance, but love can’t be found. In a world like this I’d almost rather be obscure.
